New Years is a time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. In January gyms are full and fad diets have their Black Fridays as resolutions are set, started, and soon forgotten. One resolution that I challenge you to make and keep this year is to “travel more;” it will make you a richer, smarter, and more interesting person. Here’s why:
Enrich Your Life
Travel is the only thing you can buy that will make your life richer. – Anonymous
The biggest complain I hear from people is that they don’t have enough money to travel. Here’s a secret: there are always ways to afford travel. If you need to create a budget to do so, download this step-by-step guide. Travel provides you with experiences that will fundamentally change your attitude toward life. You’ll meet people who give you new perspectives, you’ll see sites that leave you speechless, and you’ll experience countless new things. These encounters will leave you feeling humbled and blessed. In the end, the little bit of money spent will increase the richness of your life by leaps and bounds.
“You know more of a road having traveled it, than by all the conjectures and descriptions in the world.” – William Hazlitt
“A mind that is stretched by a new experience can never go back to its old dimensions.” – Oliver Wendell Holmes
There’s a lot to learn in this world and the best way to learn is by doing. When you explore news areas, meet new people, encounter different ways of thinking, and experience the many other things that happen when you travel, your mind will be broadened and your whole perspective on life will be impacted.
Live Without Regret
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
You can’t rewind and redo any part of life. This is the year to plan that trip you’ve always wanted to take. Save the money. Take the time off. Buy the ticket. You will never regret taking an adventure, but you very well may regret staying at home.
“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” – Neale Donald Walsch
It’s easier, safer, and much more comfortable to stay home. Travel will force you out of that comfort zone and it will be worth every uncomfortable second. When you travel you are forced to be flexible, resourceful, and open minded. You will experience a great deal of emotions and adventures, and your life will be more full because of it.
Create your own Opinion
“To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.” – Aldous Huxley
When we stay home and let others tell us about the world, we fail to think for ourselves. When you travel, you will discover the places you love, the cultures that resonate with you, and likely, that much of the world isn’t nearly as foreign or scary as it may seem.
2016 is a new year and creates 366 new days (yep, you get an extra one this year) to create the life you have dreamed up for yourself. Make this your year to be challenged, learn, and live without regret. It doesn’t matter where you go, just go, and wherever it is, go with all your heart. I know I will.
P.S. If money is your limiting factor when it comes to travel, remember that there are ways to afford it. Use this guide to figure out where you can make and save more money this year. Can’t wait for you to start your adventuring!
